Cricket vs Football – Why is Football still most popular game?

Cricket vs Football – Why is Football still most popular game?

In a country like India, there is a large fan following for cricket. In fact cricket is considered to be a religion, there are very small rooms for any other sports. In the case of football, it is second most popular game in the country with a very little or we can say a shoe-string fan following. As expected , football has been a bench-warmer, just like any other sports in India. Here is the brief report on both the sports – Cricket vs Football.

Cricket vs Football

Cricket vs Football!!! Which one do you support?

Cricket vs Football – History of both sports

Cricket has been dominating Indian sports since few decades, but story was different in 60’s and 70’s. At that time, India’s national game, Hockey (still national game, with a diminished status) was the most popular game among members of the public. Football and Tennis were also popular at that time. In 1951 and 1962 Asian Games, India won gold in Football. During 60’s the Football team also qualified for regularly for summer Olympics. The team also was invited to play the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. It did not take part in the competitions as the players still were playing barefoot. Lack of funds and insufficient practice ahead of tournament prevented them to go to Brazil.

Things changed in 80’s. India won its first Cricket World Cup in 1983, co-hosting the Cricket World Cup in 1987, Sachin Tendulkar making his debut in 1989, and much more. Addition to this, below par performance by Football and Hockey team gave advantage to Cricket for gaining a huge fan following. And from then there is always a concern with lack of organisation structure in Football, especially at youth level.

Cricket vs Football – Things that needs to be changed

Sports needs to be developed in an athlete from his childhood. Since there is a huge support for those who play cricket, other sports

are getting diminished. Most of the schools in India provide cricket facilities for children who are interested in playing cricket. Children with other sporting talents hardly find places where they could go and groom themselves. In India, very few cities like Kolkata, Pune, Panaji, Kochi, Chennai etc. where you find huge soccer fan following. Here schools also provide facilities to groom up their soccer talent. What we need is to develop sports as a daily activity at school level.  And make corners for each and every sport a child plays. For example, in United States of America, they provide facilities for each and every sport a child plays at school level.

Cricket vs Football

Cricket vs Football!!! Which is better?

Still many discussions are there to be done, but now lets see why Football overtakes cricket, becoming the most popular game in the world.

Cricket vs Football – Why Football is the most popular game in the world?

1. Time Limit

In a duration of 90 minutes, you experience a range of actions, anger, sadness, happiness, hope, celebration and joy. Thais Football!

But in case of cricket, it lasts at an average 4-hours (Twenty-20), 8 hours (One-Day) and 5 Days for a test match!

Now say, the world in which live make every second count, who would sit for long time to just watch a game? And that is why, soccer is preferred over cricket.

2. The Weather

Whatever happens, heavy rain, snowfall or gale force winds, soccer must go on. Soccer is played irrespective of weather, but this cannot be said in Cricket’s case.

If it rains, or any other weather problem occurs, a cricket match is either delayed, reduced (in case of limited overs games) or abandoned. Spectators get disappointed for this.

3. Support for teams and players

Cricket vs Football

Football Fans

Every football team has the motto “You’ll never walk Alone”. And yes, this is true. Football teams pride their victories to their 12th man, what we call spectators. You will see people screaming, dancing, enjoying for almost each and every pass in a high fever soccer game.

But you will not see this in every cricket match. Matches like India v/s Pakistan, Australia v/s England have some full crowd support, but most of the times you will never find a full attendance in a cricket match.

Cricket vs Football

Cricket Fans

In most of the matches of 2011 Cricket World Cup, stands went empty. But in case of 2010 FIFA World Cup, the least attendance would have been around 60%.

It shows how popular is Football, compared to cricket.

3. The World Cup

You truly call it a World Cup, because in soccer every country in the world has a chance to qualify. Not just a few nations, each and every team take part in qualifiers. 32 nations play for the world cup. There are lot of surprises, lot of shocks in the world cup, and most of the time its unpredictable.

Cricket vs Football

World Cups

In case of cricket there are only 10-14 nations hardly playing. The full time ICC members even don’t play qualifiers for the World Cup, the directly get qualified. Recently there was a proposal of withdrawing associate teams from World Cup, this means there will be only 10 teams competing for the World Cup.

4. Media and Reports

Football controversies are always the news of front page. Let it be Maradona’s drinking habit, transfer rumours, or Ronaldo’s new girlfriend. Football players are no less than celebrities of  Hollywood.

Most of the people don’t like to watch on-field controversies, like spot-fixing, sledging etc. Most of the cricket players are not highlighted in media.

5. IPL vs EPL

Cricket vs Football

Club Competitions: EPL vs IPL

IPL is cricket’s answer to football’s EPL. IPL has gained tremendous response and gained success, but still for many of the people, IPL is a money driven tournament. So does EPL, but still players prefer to stay in their clubs instead of going to La Liga, Bundesliga etc. But things are different in IPL. In Champions League players prefer to play for their IPL teams instead of their local home teams.

Still EPL has much more fan following then IPL. So football takes a bow here too!

6. Legends of the Game

Players like Pele, Maradona, Beckham, Zidane are few legends of football. Even you travel to rural villages of Africa, you will find kids sporting in Beckham, Messi jerseys, playing football.

Cricket vs Football

Sachin(left) and Zidane

Similarly in cricket, Bradman, Tendulkar, Richards are legends. But have you seen people wearing their jerseys and roaming around streets? In India, you will find people roaming around streets wearing Real Madrid, Manchester United, Barca jerseys, but you will not find anyone wearing any cricket jerseys instead of team India. IPL jerseys are seen to be very rare.

7. Fitness Issue

Cricket is one of the forgiving sport. You might have seen many cricketers with a huge tummy. That reveals that they aren’t good at their body structure. But in case of football, each and every player is well built in his shape and size.

The cricketers does not have much concern about fitness, because they don’t run as much as football players do in a single match.

In football a player have to tackle, defend and slide. But in cricket, if you are batting just hit the ball in the right area to get runs, if fielding  then just stop/catch the ball, or if you are bowling, try to get the batsman out.

Cricket vs Football

Football is more popular then cricket

Cricket is known as Gentlemen’s Game, but still Football remains the beautiful game. Cricket might be a religion, but Football rules the world!

  1. Really you think cricket doesn’t need fitness , really really….. , ask maradona to bat for 3 days like dravid or steve waugh

  2. wake up…get a reality check…maybe your a biased soccer freak, so don't know the popularity of cricket….90 min of soccer is torture, allthewhile, waiting for a goal to happen(which mostly doesn't happen-draws) and kicking that ugly, round fat kid all around..atleast in cricket u get to see 4,6, single everyother ball keeping the audience interested! NOTE: As u have already mentioned(Die hard fan of Man-u), so I know u will be again biased in your comment…Be happy and enjoy all sports..

    • more than 200 countries disagree with you while about 10-15 countries will agree with you…..
and test is the most exciting game in the world right?
they throw and over then take a 2 min break lol…fatties…..can’t even run properly ha hahaahaha

  3. only a dumb man would say that cricket is better than football…football is way better and it’s played in almost all countries and cricket is played in less than 30 countries

    • Hey what 200 countries play football…….and cricket is played by about 30 countries . This truly means one thing……….football is easy to play and cricket is an advanced game ………..go home and get well soon you f****** freak

      • Lol…u fools who told u cricket is played in only 30 countries…despite soccer a bit popular in India, how many have seen india at world cup..Nobody in Brazil, urugay even knows that soccer is popular in India. Same goes the case for other countries who don’t qualify for cricket WC but still cricket is hugely popular and fools like u think nobody plays cricket…Cricket is played in 108 contries for u kind information…

      • Cricket is played by 30 poor countries like India, Pak, Bangladesh,Kenya,Srilanka etc. So it is a advanced game in Poor countries and poor people.

  4. For me Cricket is better game. cricket is difficult game than football.. need to be good in many aspects. Cricket touches all aspects mental stability, fitness, technique in bowling, batting… Techniques r there in football bt less than cricket.. Do you aware how many types of bowling available.. a cricketer can play football– striking s easy.. if a footballer play against normal bowler, he cant withstand even for 3 deliveries. abt jersy… here many wear jersy bcoz jersy design s good not tat they support. u r saying like in india people wear epl jersy bt nt ipl.. so u saying epl fans r larger than ipl.. if u hink so u r biggest fool in earth…

    • He is not but u are a fool football has less techniques ok you should try to curve a ball around the wall during a freekick, try to pass a ball properly from one end of pitch to the other football is and will always be better than cricket

    • No in football more mental ability is required, 22 players keep their eyes glued to a ball for one and half hour, keep running, again ability to apply strong presence of mind to keep the ball under their feet, passing the ball to team mate etc etc. Cricket is a lazy game, where one ball is bowled then rest for 1 minute (to wait for next ball).
In football continuous attention is required with running which is more difficult, more praise worthy.

  5. i think what rahul bhat said is true, i live in italy one of the predominant soccer freak country! if you ask me i would scream in high tone soccer sucks! in india youths like you and sanjoy ghosh soccer is just a fashion like how you wear your trousers below your waist! guys! cricket has everything in it! not like soccer for you to expect a goal from you fav team till the end! and when it is draw you go for tie breaker which is like a child's play! football is an ancient game i am glad it still continues to be one of the biggest game in the world! but do not say that it has fare play! football players are like children, they fight and cry and cheat on field itself which you can rarely see in cricket! between once brazil and whole of europe qualifies and enter into cricket fever the so called foodball fever will vanish! and kid we just started with 20/20 a decade ago wait for it to occupy the whole world! when i came to this country no single kid knew about criket 9 years ago! now they have their club and playing cricket professionally!

  6. I came across to the article by an accident, and I have the feeling this whole article is an accident.
just scroll down and see section 7, fitness. Who ever wrote this article has never ever played cricket in any level, or probably hasnt played any sport in his life time.

Cricket REQUIRED ENORMOUS FITNESS, because your body has to take a 5 days beating, in tests, one day beating in 50 overs or 2 days beatings in school matches(Sri Lanka). And if you a fast bowler who bowls lets say, 20 over a day, you may probably have run lot more than any football player. Same goes for any fielder, and batsmen who needs to run between the wickets all the time ! Cricketers I knew, whether they had tummies, like Aravinda de silva in SL, were extremely FIT athletes. Even tendulkar is bit bulky, but we all know how FIT he is !

So, my advice to you, please stop talking something YOU DONT KNOW.

  7. I like soccer(football) but i had been liking cricket since childhood and still like it and I saw in my entire life that playing cricket needs outstanding fitness but in football, it isn’t. Money is considered a part of football. Footballers are paid huge amount of money, likely cristiano gets almost 50,000 $ in one day, but sports has not to be regarded with money it should be with sportsmanship. unlike sachin he plays wholeheartedly for his country, loyalty means everything to him, not money, even if you don’t pay sachin he would it anyway !!!! and if footballers will be not paid they will football immediately. Cricket is worthy to be called gentlemen’s game because it does concern with money whereas the money is part of football.

  8. football rocks …cricket sucks really sucks too many commercials…they always change the rules to make it more interesting….cricket will never ever come close to football……print it out.

  9. bullshit….its not abt a goal..it abt the tension and exitement that occurs…passes, smooth touches, missed opportunity, some incredible attempts…each of the above things are equally exciting as watching a goal….

  10. This is totally stupid. Tell me u cannot accept that football is popular and most exciting game. In cricket u can only find it exciting in last 5 overs. But i feel excited every minute of football. I think u have never seen free-kicks, tackles, danger passes, great crosses, ultimate volleys, awesome penalties, etc etc . I think those who play cricket look fat & ugly. They even have tummy, they look without a shape like amoeba. but if u see footballers, they have very athletic body & great stamina. In cricket except for bowler, batsmen & keeper all the other players are an audience. but for football u have to watch out every minute for the ball, even the goal keeper has to concentrate every minute & i have never seen a fat, ugly referee standing in one place like a statue in football. & also i have never liked to watch ads for ever 7-10mins. Its really irritating. Football matches has only one break.

  11. In football a player have to tackle, defend and slide. But in cricket, if you are batting just hit the ball in the right area to get runs, if fielding then just stop/catch the ball, or if you are bowling, try to get the batsman out./////

this simply shows how dumb u are.. lol.. so by ur take, tennis is so easy rite.? because all they have to do is hit the ball back to the other side.. LMAO. u r a fool dude. Facing a ball which comes at the speed of 165kmph is not as easy as tackling the football. bowling a ball with 165KMPH is not as easy as defending. Standing in the slip for 2.5 continuous days with full concentration is not as easy as sliding. Get some common sense before u comment about a sport.

  12. What the f**k has been written in this article…. Itz unable to read… Because of the background.

  13. in my view both are good.i am a cricket fan.i like cricket than football.at one time football is better than cricket but aftrr the entering of 20-20 cricket it really change the game will be more interstablr like football.

    • In cricket to make it exciting field restrictions have been removed, relaxations were given to batsman. My suggestion is let only a bowler bowl remove all fielding activities, then every ball will be thrown to boundary by batsman while batting, It would be more exciting, Correct? Idiot Cricket ….and its law makers.

  14. How many Countries Played Cricket? the different of Football & Cricket is -In Football most popular match is Brazil vs Argentina . if this match happen whole World watching this match but in cricket INDIA vs Pakistan not whole world watching this match

  15. Sanjoy Ghosh wtf are u saying dude??? its about the excitement which makes the audience feel better. You are also in the list of most common audience. Who watches the bloody thing for 90 minutes with only few goals….And the most famous encounter in cricket will be England vs Australia in the ASHES and people do watch a test match (which you would think boring) in large numbers for five days.!!!!!!! Will you watch football if they play for more than 2 hrs????? First get yourself answer of this and then talk!!!

  16. cricket is blooody Sport. watch just World Cup Football 32nations fights for the glory & Whole World watching the every matches England vs Germany or England vs France,Italy vs Spain etc matches r more ecitment then Ashes . How can u compare the with Football 208 Countries played Football under FIFA. How many Countries played Cricket-such a boring game

  17. Football is more exited game. for second to every min. Football required more body fitness, that's why every Cricketer play Football .it's Spirit of Sport. but even not a single Footballer play Cricket .

  18. Sanjoy Ghosh dude first of all stop barking…..oh you are saying that football is exciting every second and cricket is boring …….i saw many football fans very relaxing and watching football matches sitting in the chair………..but no cricket fan will be seated while the match is being played. Yes I agree that Football is played by all the nations and it has high following but only following does not make it more exciting than cricket …………and all the cricket playing nations play football except few but many football playing nations cannot even play cricket ………they cannot even hold the bat like you . You will be saying every cricketer plays football but not the other way! But i will say cricketers know how to play football but those who play football cannot even play cricket………..So if you know playing two things and do one of them all the time …..it means that you know that will be exciting…..I know your feel as you are an indian all your friends and neighbours will be watching cricket and you dont like it ., and became jealous of cricket and started insulting it ………..So GET WELL SOON and decrease your EGO towards others ……..GOOD BYE

    • Footballers play other sports but not cricket… Its depends on weather bro…
And right now its raining so stop your paly go and sleep…
You guys cannot play in rain, snow fall, bad weather – you are tooo dependant on eather…
Look @ us football fans, irrespective of weather we can play with big stadiums various nations, lot of fundings, passion, anger, happiness, sadness, joy… And, you stay in house its STILL RAINING !!!

      HA HA HA !!!

  19. 1st of all u jealous on Football that;s why u can't understand the truth . but honi ko kon tal sakta hai No.1 always be No.1 & it's FOOTBALL/SOCCER. & I watch both games. dude do u know Ganguly & Dhoni the 2most success ful Indian Cricket team Captain both Love Football, both r saying his 1st Love Football. but any World Class Footballer Like Ronaldo,Messi or Kaka & many Others don;t understand Cricket ,mainly said they have not require to understand it. Class me jo 1st hote hai uske andhar Quality hote hai isiliya wo 1st hote hai. Football has both=Quality + Quantity (more peoples Like this game) .even jo desh ranked Football me 154.150 ayauske aspas hai us desh me v Football pasad karte hai .

  20. Sanjoy Ghosh hey i have just compared amount if "ENTERTAINMENT" there is in both the sports for the fans to find the reason to watch them i mean its just a waste of time watching a thing for 90 minutes which has exictement for about 5 minutes ……IT WILL JUST BE A WASTE OF TIME …….and bitch pls i follow cricket more than you and DHONI @ GANGULY never said they like football more than cricket they would have said football is also good ………do not misunderstand things and bark without reason….okay good night do not cry have a good sleep

  21. thik se Doni & Ganguly ka Wikipedia check kar yaa autobiography par lena , and in same pay bitch don't be silly landi

  22. dear author why is football not popular in america, and learn how to write the blogs .football is not only the game in the world there are 3000 recognizable games in the world.every has their own interest.so don't compare one game with other.u dum ass and finally i love cricket than football and even i don,t know what is manchester united so shut your fucking mouth

    • Of course you know Manu (I am not that club fan, but Barcelona still….) and even American were qualified for world cup… so ofcourse they know Football…
And cricket … ha ha ha… Legends of cricket could have played for 2-3 days bat contineously for 10 times max in their career (Mostly standing and leaving ball in tests :p), Football Legends have played 70-75 matches of 90 minutes a year and such 20 years of career… So, Football is game of running, stamina, passion and cricket is game of talk than playing….

walk around any ground in your locality, you will find cricket playing boys shoutin like – “hey bro give us the ball” (because their fielders are too tired to get it) while footballers they play with huge stamina and run…

  23. Football fans Are u really aware why cricket isn’t popular because it is not olympic sport This is the main reason but nonetheless T20 has arrived and now what cricket need is some time to shine like a star–>Footballers are cheats, they do drama just to achieve penalties and bullshit etc just to win a Game instead of Hearts…But Cricketers wins Hearts instead of Game….Cricket has tremendous varieties,format..It has suspense every next ball.we can’t find this in so called popular sport Football….Hv we ever saw Gentlemen spectators in Football ? Cricketers gets ovation when they field…They get a loud applause when they arrive to bat.Do we get this kind of spirit in Football?I accept Football has immense stadiums like Wembley but not better than The LORDS !

  24. Perfectly said Rahul……In most of the matches, there's hardly any goal….There is only one way you can win a football match and that's goal…But in cricket, there are so many departments-> Batting, bowling, fielding..So many formats of Cricket-> T20, One Day, Test cricket(which is at times, Magical)..That's why, it is the game with maximum varieties..Which the football lacks……….

  25. Sathya Narayanan T
hello cricket has a true spirit i know football is great but in many matches its easy to guess the winner once a side has 1-2 goal lead exceptions are common though like Germany vs Argentina but cricket can boil down to 1 ball one wicket 1 run and this is quite common in T20 also here no team can be predicted winner until last bowl is bowled

  26. Champion Less Sanjoy
Cricket boils down to a single balls alot and then in football the problem is it got famous because it was a cheaper sport only thing needed is a ball and new synthetic advancements helped football alot
cricket loved the old school the leather balls and wooden bats expensive sport and so harder to spread so that was obvious cricket is harder to export all around the world and cricket can give u jumping jacks too and sometimes not always football does get a bit boring as the main thing in football is anticipation and goals are mainly hard to come by and if they become common then football becomes boring and in cricket 6 balls change the complection of the game

  27. Cricket is not at all boring we find action on each bowl delivered by bowler whereas in football you have to wait 45 minutes to c one goal. . the difference is cricket is not advertised well in other countries. .otherwise why would sub Continent people are made when its comes to cricket

  28. Seven Wonders of Cricket
    1) Prize money of cricket is very less as compared with football
    2) No longer gentleman game
    3) Long TV Adds
    4) Mental pressure to parents as majority of matches are in exam period because cricket cant be played in rainy seasons
    5) Can kill physically
    6) Recognized only in 10 countries
    7) TV Break is within game or Game is meant for tv break ….hard to judge
