Newly-appointed ODI captain Shubman Gill addressed the media for the first time since being named India’s leader in the 50-over format. Gill, who has succeeded Rohit Sharma as ODI skipper, fielded questions about his elevation on the eve of the second Test against the West Indies in New Delhi. He revealed that he was notified about the captaincy change shortly before BCCI’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar made the official announcement at a press conference.
“The announcement came during the middle of the Test match, but I found out a bit earlier,” Gill shared during Thursday’s press briefing. “Of course, it’s a huge responsibility and an even greater honor. I’m thrilled at the prospect of leading my country in this format. The past few months have been truly exciting for me.”
Having taken over as India’s Test captain a few months earlier, Gill expressed his desire to excel in all three formats and aim for victories on every front.
“I’m excited for what lies ahead. My focus is to remain in the present and not dwell on past achievements—either mine or the team’s. My objective is to keep moving forward and try to win everything in the months to come,” he added.
With Rohit Sharma no longer alongside him in Tests and T20Is, Gill will, however, benefit from Rohit’s presence during the ODI series in Australia. Reflecting on his predecessor’s influence, Gill acknowledged that he has learned a lot from Rohit—especially his composure on the field and his ability to foster camaraderie within the team.
“There’s so much I’ve picked up from Rohit Bhai. His calm demeanor and the way he builds friendships in the group are qualities I really admire and hope to emulate,” Gill remarked.
